In honor of Darrell Campbell, the former Sweetwater Police officer who was shot in the head in July 2011, while on duty with the Snyder Police Department, the Sweetwater Police Patrol Association and Sweetwater Elks Lodge joined forces to host a benefit for the Campbell Family. The lunch, dinner, auction and dance benefit were held in Sweetwater on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Sweetwater Elks Lodge. A brisket lunch was held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a brisket dinner at 6 p.m. A live auction started at 7 p.m. and a DJ dance followed. Jimmy and Elaine Curtis donated the DJ service. Southern Circus also provided live music for the event. Brisket plates included a homemade dessert, peach cobbler made by Jennifer Cunningham and drink.
Family, friends and well wishers attended the event in honor of Campbell, who made his appearance around noon. He was alert and doing very well. Local law enforcement and community members greeted him with applause and cheers.
Many donated to the benefit including briskets donated by individual members of the Sweetwater Elks Lodge, Sweetwater Police Department and District Attorney’s Office. The Sweetwater Firefighters Association donated drinks for the delivery meals. The Sweetwater Elks Lodge donated their facilities for the event and were extremely instrumental in putting the benefit together, according to members of the SPPA.Â
Cash donations have also been made towards the benefit from CLEAT (Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas), the Sweetwater Jaycees/Roosters, Stanley Ford, AES Wind Generation, Pickrell Wrecker Services, L.R. Sells and Son scrap iron, Midwest Finance, Richard and Linda Posey and Tom and Jo Henderson of Blue Goose Ranch.
“We still consider Darrell part of our family here at the Sweetwater Police Department,” said Sweetwater police detective Lance Richburg. “He put his life on the line and protected the streets of Sweetwater for seven years and he is very deserving of the community’s support.”
All proceeds from the benefit went to Darrell and Amber Campbell and their five children.
