Kailey Edwards, daughter of ex-Sweetwater High School player Corey Edwards, scored 20 points as Legacy defeated Monarch 58-51 to win the Class 5A girls state basketball championship Friday night. She will play for the University of Denver starting next year.
Monarch led 14-5 early as Alexus Johnson controlled the inside before sitting with foul trouble. However, an 11-0 run by the Lightning in the second quarter gave them a 28-26 halftime lead.
Monarch threatened but couldn’t overtake the Lightning in the end. Ashton Davis led Monarch with 13. Rebecca Richmond added 11, and Johnson had 10.
