West Texas Honor Flight

World War II (WWII) veterans are being offered the chance of a lifetime — a free trip to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The West Texas Honor Flight has up to 125 seats available to be filled by area veterans. The group uses this opportunity to honor and thank WWII veterans for their service to the nation. Participants will receive accommodations, food and transportation free of charge. Medical personnel and other volunteers will be on hand to assist the veterans during the trip as well.
The festivities will begin on April 11 at the MCM Elegante Suites in Abilene, where the participating veterans will register. That evening, a meal will be served and veterans will have a time to get acquainted with each other and share stories. Also, the MCM Elegante will furnish rooms for the veterans that night.
April 12 is when the trip to D.C. will take place. Early in the morning, the veterans will enjoy a light meal and then board the buses. The buses will lead them to Abilene Regional Airport, where they will board the plane and fly to Dulles Airport. Once the plane arrives to Dulles, a fleet of buses will take the group to Washington, D.C.
After lunch, the group will proceed to the World War II Memorial. Cameras are welcome so that veterans can take pictures of the monuments and their fellow veterans. Other sites in the area may be visited depending on the remaining time.
Following the D.C. visit, participants will head back to Dulles where they will board the plane to fly back to Abilene Regional Airport. The group will then be transported back to the MCM Elegante for their own transportation home.
Those that are eligible must complete an application and submit it with a copy of their discharge paper from the service. The trip is also offered to those that are terminally ill.
The deadline for applications is on Saturday, March 5. Applications are available through the offices of Robert R. McBride in Sweetwater, located at 100 E. 3rd Street, Ste. 207A, or at Jim Defoor's office in Abilene by calling 674-1328.
