Deaf Action Center offers presentation on services

The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department will have representatives from the Deaf Action Center (DAC) on Thursday, October 18.

Representatives from the Deaf Action Center (DAC) in Abilene will be at the health department on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. to talk about their services. The DAC serves people who are deaf and hard of hearing with a comprehensive range of services. They will educate and train people in coping and communication strategies, assistive devices and Relay Texas Service and more. DAC assists the hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind, vision impaired, speech impaired and mobility impaired, in receiving free communication devices from the State of Texas. The public is invited to attend and learn about the services that DAC offers. Hearing Loss Resource Specialist and Deafness Resource Specialists Programs are funded by DARS office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS).
 The health department is administering the flu vaccine during regular immunization clinic every Wednesday from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. and the second Wednesday of each month until 6 p.m. The cost is $20 for all adults and children 3-18 years of age, even if they have insurance. Medicare is accepted. The cost for children who do not have insurance is $6. Medicaid is accepted. If you have any questions regarding immunizations please call 235-5463.
The health department will also administer the flu vaccine at the Nolan County Health Fair on Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Texas State Technical College The Center. The health department encourages the residents of Nolan County to come out to the health fair and visit the different booths available. There is no cost to attend and door prizes will be given away.
Family Planning services are available through several funding sources. Services include pap smears, breast exams, pregnancy testing, methods of birth control and screening and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. For an appointment call 235-2869.
