Funeral services for Derrel Eugene Turnbow, 78, of Roby will be held Monday, March 5, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Roby with Rev. Bill Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be at Roby Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 4, 2012, from 5-7 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Turnbow died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
He was born on Aug. 12, 1933 in Sylvester. He married Vera G. Denniston April 5, 1954 in Grand Prairie. Derrel was a retired Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force serving in Korea. He came to the area in 1981 and was a truck driver for Gypsum Transport until 1997. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Roby and was a lifetime memer of the VFW. Derrel had worked for the police department in Hereford, as a prison guard in California, in the city sanitation department in Middletown, Ohio, and as a department store manager, and also had Patriot Donut Shop in Blueball, Ohio.
Survors include his wife, Vera Turnbow of Roby; two daughters, Grace Gwyn Montelongo and Lisa Lynne Montelongo, both of Abilene; five sons, Gerald Brooks Turnbow of Marlborough, Mass., Randal Eugene Turnbow of Monroe, Ohio, Joseph Clinton Turnbow of Clarksville, Tennessee, Carl Douglas Turnbow of Daegu, South Korea and Everett Brett Turnbow of Miamisburg, Ohio; 16 grand-children; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Arlina Hill of Fort Worth; and two brothers, Cecil Turnbow of Virginia and Carl Turnbow of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Arzetta Turnbow; a sister, Kathryn Ivy; and a brother, Lloyd Turnbow.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the U.S. Air Force from Dyess Air Force Base.
Pallbearers will be Randy Turnbow, Carl Turnbow, Raymond Montelongo, Mario Montelongo, Christopher Anderson and Kirk Tucker.
