With a top-notch headliner, great sponsors and wonderful donors, this year’s 41st annual West Texas Rehabilitation Center’s telethon promises to be the best yet. At seven o’clock on Saturday, Jan. 22, the popular country group Diamond Rio will step into the spotlight at REHAB 2011. Suddenlink Communications and gridSMART/AEP Texas are the official sponsors and, as they have for many years, Area-Wide Phone Books is also helping underwrite the show as a contributing sponsor. The Host Hotel for the Telethon is the MCM Elegante Suites. American Airlines/American Eagle is the official airlines for Rehab 2011. Telethon auction support is provided by our friends at NTS Communications.
Diamond Rio burst onto the country music scene in 1991 when their first single, "Meet in the Middle," skyrocketed to No. 1 on the country charts. The group's rich vocal harmonies and glossy picking helped define the "young country" movement of the early 1990s. Comprised of Marty Roe, Gene Johnson, Brian Prout, Dana Williams, Jimmy Olander and Dan Truman, Diamond Rio is a four-time winner of the Country Music Association's Vocal Group of the Year award and has earned the Academy of Country Music's similar honor twice. Diamond Rio has sold over 10 million albums and its roster of No. 1 hits includes "Beautiful Mess," "I Believe," "How Love Makes Me Feel" and "One More Day".
Charlie Chase, longtime co-host of the popular “Crook and Chase” talk show on the Nashville Network will return for the 10th year to anchor the Rehab 2010 host desk for the five-hour special.
Texas legend Red Steagall will be back along with The Boys in the Bunkhouse for the show. Other regulars lined up to appear are Bill and Susan Hayes (Days of Our Lives) Brad Maule (General Hospital) and Twyla Foreman.
Television stations in Abilene, San Angelo, Austin, Corpus Christi, Laredo, Midland/Odessa, Lubbock, Amarillo, Waco/Temple and Wichita Falls/Lawton, Oklahoma carry the show live. The show will again be streaming live at WestTexasRehab.org.
In addition to the telethon, an annual internet auction of merchandise and services provided by friends and businesses will take bids at WestTexasRehab.org. Bids will be accepted beginning in late December and will continue through the Jan. 22, telecast. Auction items will be on display at the Abilene Civic Center beginning at 6 p.m. on the 22nd. Last year, over $400,000 in merchandise was featured in the auction.
The annual telethon raises more than one million dollars to help make it possible for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center to serve more than 28,000 people regardless of their financial circumstance. The Center was established in 1953 as a private non-profit outpatient rehabilitation center and has become one of the largest, most comprehensive facilities of its kind in the nation. The Rehab operates facilities in Abilene, San Angelo and Ozona.
The Rehab 2011 Telethon will air live and originates from the Abilene Civic Center on Jan. 22, from 7 p.m. to midnight. Tickets to the show are $12 each for those who like to be a part of the Abilene Civic Center audience for this entertainment event. Tickets can be purchased at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and at the Abilene Civic Center box office.
