Texas A&M Agrilife Extension's Family Consumer Sciences agent Tasha Baxter (Nolan County) provided a program entitled, "Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes" for patients with diabetes and their families, as well as any others interested in attending. The Sweetwater-Nolan County Heath Department sponsored the location and Alice Velez with the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital's Diabetes Outreach Program provided free blood glucose testing. The program was divided and presented into four different areas with four different speakers with special knowledge in those areas.
Dr. Larry McEachern with Shannon Clinic in Sweetwater presented, "What is Diabetes" to help patients understand the disease.
Ted Bayse, pharmacist and owner of The Medicine Place pharmacy presented a program entitled "Medications." He spoke about medications used for diabetes and the importance of reading labels on medication presently being used.
Shelly Davis, drug representative with Novo Nordisk presented a program about nutrition for diabetics and spoke about proper food to purchase and what food causes elevation in glucose levels.
Wes Stafford, M.S. with the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital physical therapy department, presented a program about exercise and its importance, especially in the life of a diabetic.
Snacks, drinks and lunch were provided to those attending by Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals. Between speakers, names were drawn from those attending for door prizes, sponsored by the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension office. The six-hour program was well-attended and the information provided was helpful to participants.
