Dr. John R. Cox III

Dr. John R. Cox III, 81, of Sweetwater passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo.
Private family graveside services were held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Sweetwater Cemetery with a family member officiating. Services were under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
He was born on July 14, 1932, in Sweetwater. He married Martha Yvonne Grissom on July 2, 1959, in Post.
Cox was a lifelong resident of Sweetwater. He graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1949. He went to Texas A&M for two years and on to Columbia University in New York for four years, receiving his Doctor of Optometry in 1956. Shortly after, he was drafted into the United States Army. He then opened his practice in the old Blue Bonnet Hotel and later built his current office in 1972. Dr. Cox practiced optometry for 55 years.
As well as being a well-known optometrist, Dr. Cox also served as Mayor of Sweetwater from 1969-1971. He was part of the board that helped bring Texas State Technical Institute (now Texas State Technical College) into Sweetwater. Dr. Cox received an award for 50 years of service from Texas Optometric Association. Dr. Cox touched many people’s lives with his kindness and generosity and will be dearly missed.
Memorials may be made to Sweetwater County-City Library, 206 Elm, Sweetwater, TX 79556, of which Dr. Cox was a lifelong supporter and avid reader.
Survivors include his son, J.R. Cox IV of Austin; twin daughters, Lesley Cox and Elise Cox of New York City, New York; brother Ronnie L. Cox and wife Sally of Sweetwater; nephew and niece, Jason Cox and wife Tracie and Lisa Cox and husband Todd; and great-nephews Brandon and Chase Sanders.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Yvonne Cox on March 9, 1976; and his parents.
