On March 3, 2011 at the regular monthly meeting of the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps (BCMRC), a special recognition dinner was held for Dr. Jerry Smola. He has served as the BCMRC's first coordinator for the past three years.
In January 2008 the director of the Nolan County Health Department, Don Ware, and Dr. Smola began to plan with the local law enforcement, Rolling Plains Hospital, local Fire Department and the local Emergency Reaction Team to establish a MRC for the area.
After its establishment on Feb. 16, 2008 the MRC, under Dr. Smola's leadership, has had many classes and exercises, for MRC volunteers on how to help the community in time of natural or man-made crises. MRC has also been involved in the community at health fairs, Heart Walk and has handed out health fliers for safety and how to prepare for crises in homes. He has presided at every monthly meeting for the past three years and attended many state and out of state conferences to bring back information to keep the community safer.
He was honored by Surgeon General of the United States Regina M. Benjamin with a letter of thanks for his service to MRC and it was read by Stacy Sayre, Region 6 MRC coordinator.
Ray Browning, the newly appointed Big Country MRC coordinator, presented Dr. Smola an award made of crystal to thank him from the local MRC for his three years of loyal service.
