ABILENE — The District 5 Major League title game was tied 0-0 through two innings Thursday. But Abilene Eastern’s Nationals got three third-inning runs, and cruised from there to a 13-0 victory over Sweetwater’s Rangers at Cal Young Park.
Sweetwater’s only hit was Rylan Hayes’ double, a booming drive to centerfield that led off the second inning. He was stranded after moving to third due to three straight strikeouts.
Though it was 0-0 at the time, the Nationals seized control. After three runs in the third, they pulled further ahead with two runs in the fourth to make it 5-0.
Eastern socked a home run in a three-run fifth to make it 8-0, and added five more tallies in the sixth to finish off a dominating win.
Sweetwater, meanwhile, failed to get another runner on base after Hayes’ hit. The only other baserunner was A.J. Ramirez, who reached on an error in the first. Starting pitcher Blake Andrus went 5.1 innings, and Gavin Reyes and Xavier Frith came on in the sixth to get the last two outs. The Rangers had advanced to the final by beating the Eastern Braves, 6-5, in the semifinals Wednesday at the same ballpark.
Sweetwater began the tournament on Saturday with a 16-6 win over the Snyder Cubs, then edged Wylie’s Astros 10-9 and beat Clyde’s Horned Frogs 12-1.
