ABILENE — After losing its first four games by a combined score of 39-13, the Sweetwater High School baseball team roared back in Saturday’s finale of the Abilene Invitational tour-nament to crush Wylie 11-1 and end up on a high note.
Thanks to a big nine-run second inning and the pitching of Sterling Reeves, who allowed just three hits, the Mustangs easily defeated a Wylie team that came in with three straight wins.
All nine of Sweetwater’s starters scored at least once in the contest. Reeves, Connor Stafford and Kris Mayes each had two RBI and Mayes had a double.
Sweetwater, now 10-6-1, began play Thursday by losing to Abilene Cooper 13-3 and also to Shallowater 7-2.
Sweetwater fared a little better Friday, losing 11-7 to Abilene High in its only game but getting 10 hits including two by Mayes, Willie Norman and Greg Aiken. Mayes, Stafford, Aiken and Sean Morrow had doubles. In Saturday’s first game, Sweetwater lost to Wichita Falls Rider 8-1.
Sweetwater returns to action today for a 1 p.m. game at Andrews, before hosting Graham at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wall at noon Friday in the team’s final pre-district tuneups.
