Fire 40 percent contained
The Nolan County Complex Fire near Lake Sweetwater has burned 3,880 acres and is now 40 percent contained. According to the Texas Forest Service, this is a complex of two lightning-caused fires that burned together and encroached on the city limits of Sweetwater. Hundreds of homes were threatened, 30 were evacuated, but none were lost. Numerous airtankers, single-engine airtankers, helicopters and ground resources responded rapidly from Abilene and other staging areas.High pressure aloft will continue to prevail over the state today. Temperatures will again remain in the upper 90s to lower 100s across the state, with the highest temperatures in North Texas. Relative humidity values will generally range from 20-30 percent for most of the state with the lowest readings over the low rolling plains and big country, in the upper teens. Monsoonal moisture wrapping into New Mexico will once again bring a good chance for showers and thunderstorms for Far West Texas across the Davis and Guadalupe Mountains and possibly into the western panhandle during the peak heating hours. Winds will be highest for the western half of the state, reaching 10 to 15 mph with some gusts nearing 25 during the late afternoon, especially for the northern Panhandle and in West and South branch along the Mexican Border.
