According to the Texas Forest Service, right at 500 acres were burned in a fire near Lake Trammell over the weekend. The fire was said to have been caused by a person illegally burning during a burn ban. The person was given a citation.
Maryneal, Blackwell, Lake Sweetwater, Nolan and Roscoe Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as all three Sweetwater Fire Department trucks helped fight the blaze, as well as the Nolan County Commissioners with a maintainer and track loaders. A pump from one SFD truck broke and had to go back for service during the fire. The Texas Forest Service provided the use of several trucks and two dozers. TxDOT brought fuel that kept the trucks going and The Big Country Medical Reserve Corps brought a shelter out for firefighters to rest in while they were taking a break and refilling their trucks.
A retired SFD assistant chief also helped during the fire. "Terry Hendley is a great help and very much appreciated," said Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. "The aircraft were a great help until the storm in Fisher County sent them for cover due to lightning. The spotter plane did excellent work with letting us know where the hot spots were and what we were going to need to get to certain spots. They would also let us know about houses that were not on our maps that needed protecting. I always appreciate the Texas Forest Service in the air. We could not have done what we did without them," said Madden. "Without the air assets we would not have been able to save every single structure, except for a deer blind that melted."
