Donations to the 30th annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive have been phenomenal and tens of thousands of families in the Ark-La-Tex will receive food this year from the effort.
The food drive is sponsored by Brookshire Grocery Company stores, along with many service organizations, food pantries, school groups and other businesses and volunteers.
âWe donât have our final numbers yet, but the results weâve seen so far have been outstanding,â said Sam Anderson, manager of community involvement for BGC. âWeâve received good feedback from our partnering groups and store teams. A lot of people need help this year and weâre glad to be able to assist many of them right here before Christmas.â
Donations of non-perishable food items were left at stores and other designated areas starting in mid-November. In addition to the groceries, BGC donates a baking hen to each family assisted in the program. The company also donates specially-designed boxes for groups to pack the food.
âThanks to all the wonderful volunteers, store employees, customers and others who have contributed,â Anderson added. âThis is our largest community service project, and we canât do it without everyone chipping in to help. It truly is a team effort.â
In many areas the food is delivered to screened households based on need. In others, families who need assistance go to a designated food pantry or other location to receive the gifts. In Sweetwater, the donations are made to the Sweetwater Goodfellows.
