Four of the six Nolan County high school varsity basketball teams outside Sweetwater won their games on Tuesday including both of the teams from Blackwell.
The Blackwell girls im-proved to 2-6 in District 12-A, Division II with a 25-24 win over Veribest, while Blackwell’s boys are now 2-4 in district after a 39-34 win over Veribest.
Also winning Tuesday were the Roscoe boys, who are now 2-1 in Dis-trict 9-A, Division I after their 56-38 win over Hamlin, and the Highland girls, who beat Hermleigh 70-39 to go 6-1 in District 11-A, Division II.
In the Roscoe boys’ win over Hamlin, Caden Smith’s 25 points led the way while Juan Solis had 14, Cody Graham nine and Devan Cole six. The Plowboys wasted no time taking charge as they led 28-6 after one quarter.
The Highland girls (15-9 overall) are still in the hunt for the District 11-A, Division II lead after Tuesday’s lopsided victory at Hermleigh. The win was led by Kara Hughey, who scored 22 points to lead a balanced attack. Sierra Allen (14), Beth Richburg (13) and Callie Sandusky (10) also scored in double figures for the Lady Hornets. Highland is just one game behind the 7-0 Roby girls in dis-trict and the teams meet at Highland on Friday.
The Blackwell boys got 12 points from Caleb Jeter and Caleb Magness in their win over Veribest, while Brandon Elliott ad-ded 11 points to the Hor-nets’ winning cause.
In the girls game, Blackwell got nine points from Reccie Roland in their victory over Veribest while Amanda Bullard and Jessica Morrow had six points apiece for the Lady Hornets.
The Highland boys saw their record fall to 2-3 in District 11-A, Division II after a 58-49 defeat at Hermleigh. The Hornets started fast as they took a 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. But it was 27-27 at halftime after Hermleigh (3-3) outscored Highland 14-7 in the second period, and the Cardinals won the second half 31-22 to get the victory and move into outright third place in District 11-A, Division II. Highland was led by Josh Andrews’ 24 points, while Landon Rowlett added 16. And in District 9-A, Division I girls action, Hamlin defeated Roscoe 44-20 as the Plowgirls’ record fell to 1-3 while first-place Hamlin is now 4-0. Lynnsi Moses had five points while Lindsey Williams scored four and Kaitlinn Reed three for Roscoe, who trailed 25-1 at halftime before warming up the second half. Carolina Perez paced Ros-coe with seven rebounds.
