Four area squads win

On Friday, the Highland and Roscoe boys basketball teams won to stay in a second-place tie in District 13-1A. The Highland girls also won to maintain their 13-1A lead over Roscoe. The Plowgirls got a forfeit win on Friday over Loraine, which has cancelled its entire district season.
The Roscoe and Highland boys are both 2-1 in District 13-1A. Roscoe was a 56-30 winner over Loraine and Highland beat Hermleigh 35-15 in its game. The Highland girls (5-0 district, 19-2 overall), the No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A, Division 2, won 86-24 over Hermleigh while Roscoe (4-1) lost to Odessa New Way Christian 67-47 in a non-district game Friday.
The Roscoe boys were led by Jesus Leanos with 13 points and Javier Leanos, Shelton Toliver and Cutter Davila with 12 points each, while Highland’s boys got nine points from Brandon Stevens and eight points from Ethan Wilson and Jacob Richburg. Highland and Roscoe currently trail Ira (3-0) in the District 13-1A standings.
But the Highland girls are looking down on everyone in 13-1A, winning four district games by an average of 46 points in addition to a 53-point non-district win over an Abilene home school team in place of the game with Loraine. Against Hermleigh, Sierra Allen had 24 points, Sydny Helbert 15, Beth Richburg 12 and Madison Moseley and Hannah Allen 11.
In 14-1A, Blackwell’s boys lost to No. 18 Garden City 78-45 to fall to 4-3 in district play while the girls (2-7 in district) fell to No. 5 Garden City in their game by a score of 73-13.
In the boys game, Matt Lowry tied with Garden City’s Sam Miller for high-point honors with 26, while the Blackwell girls were led by Hailey Bennett’s eight points.
Selena Perez led Roscoe’s girls with 20 points while Sunshine Saddler contribu-ted 13 against Odessa New Way Christian, which is a home school team.
The Blackwell boys came into Friday’s game tied with Bronte for third place in District 14-1A.
