Four SW girls will go to state in powerlifting
Four girls will be repre-senting Sweetwater High School on March 17 at the state powerlifting meet in Corpus Christi after top-two finishes at regionals.Loni Mendez, Joslyn Rosas, Cari Aguilar and Lexie Perez will go to state after qualifying at the regional meet held in Monahans, while Alexis Thompson qualified as a state alternate after garnering a third-place regional finish. Also competing at the regional meet for Sweet-water this past Saturday were Dana Hohn, Kimmie Lomas, Bri Painter, Allie Zavaleta and Valeria Zava-leta. Sweetwater sent a total of 10 athletes to the Division 2 event.Mendez and Rosas both won their weight classes.Mendez lifted 790 pounds in the 181-pound class to edge Perez (675 pounds). Rosas lifted 785 pounds to win the 220-pound class, and Aguilar lifted 645 pounds to finish second to Monahans’ Lyric Willis in the 132-pound class.Meanwhile, Thompson lifted 485 pounds in the 105-pound class, 30 less than two athletes who both lifted 515 pounds.Also placing at the re-gional meet were Valeria Zavaleta, who was fifth in the 114-pound class; and Lomas, who was eighth in the 132-pound class. The meet was sponsored by the Texas High School Powerlifting Association.
