Four SW girls will go to state in powerlifting

Loni Mendez, Joslyn Rosas, Cari Aguilar and Lexie Perez will go to state after qualifying at the regional girls' powerlifting meet held in Monahans.

Four girls will be repre-senting Sweetwater High School on March 17 at the state powerlifting meet in Corpus Christi after top-two finishes at regionals.
Loni Mendez, Joslyn Rosas, Cari Aguilar and Lexie Perez will go to state after qualifying at the regional meet held in Monahans, while Alexis Thompson qualified as a state alternate after garnering a third-place regional finish.
Also competing at the regional meet for Sweet-water this past Saturday were Dana Hohn, Kimmie Lomas, Bri Painter, Allie Zavaleta and Valeria Zava-leta. Sweetwater sent a total of 10 athletes to the Division 2 event.
Mendez and Rosas both won their weight classes.Mendez lifted 790 pounds in the 181-pound class to edge Perez (675 pounds). Rosas lifted 785 pounds to win the 220-pound class, and Aguilar lifted 645 pounds to finish second to Monahans’ Lyric Willis in the 132-pound class.
Meanwhile, Thompson lifted 485 pounds in the 105-pound class, 30 less than two athletes who both lifted 515 pounds.
Also placing at the re-gional meet were Valeria Zavaleta, who was fifth in the 114-pound class; and Lomas, who was eighth in the 132-pound class. The meet was sponsored by the Texas High School Powerlifting Association.
