Sweetwater batted .500 on Saturdayâ€™s opening day of District 5 Little League tournament play, as four of its eight teams in action won their games to advance to todayâ€™s second round.
Sweetwater had two win-ning teams in Major League (ages 11-12) and one each in Minor League (ages 9-10) and Junior League (ages 13-14). Eliminated were two teams in Minor League and one each in the Major League and Junior League.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Major League winners were the Astros, who beat Abilene Northern 10-4, and the Rangers, who beat Snyderâ€™s Cubs 16-6. Also, the Minor League Astros beat Jim Ned 16-9 and the Junior League Dâ€™backs beat Southern Makinâ€™ Moves 10-5.
In todayâ€™s Major League quarterfinals, the Astros will play the Abilene Eastern Nationals at 6 p.m. at Abi-leneâ€™s Cal Young Park and the Rangers play Wylieâ€™s Astros at 8 p.m. at Wylie.
In the Minor League, the Astros will go to Jim Ned to play the Clyde Giants at 6 p.m.
If all three Sweetwater teams win, they play again Tuesday as will the Junior League Dâ€™backs, who play at 8 p.m. today at Abilene North against either the North Cardinals or Snyder.
Teams losing on Saturday were the Minor League Express, who fell to Abilene Dixieâ€™s Rockhounds 8-1; the Minor League Rockies, who lost 10-3 to the Dixie Iron Pigs; the Major League Red Sox, who lost to the Snyder Rangers 7-5; and the Junior League Reds, who lost to Southern BML 7-5.
Sweetwaterâ€™s only Senior League team will begin play Tuesday against Abilene North No. 2 at the Abilene North field.
Tuesdayâ€™s Minor League and Major League winners advance to the semifinals Wednesday at the Abilene Dixie and Cal Young parks, respectively, with the title games at the same parks on Thursday.
In the Junior League, the Tuesday semifinal winners play for the title at Abilene North on Thursday.
