SWEET H2O CONCERT ON OAK: An event is being planned to offer the community of Sweetwater “something to do” this summer — an event in Sweetwater and for Sweetwater, Nolan County, and all of our region, that celebrates our place in West Texas. This is an opportunity to come together and improve our quality of life, to promote the arts and entertainment, boost our cultural awareness, support the local economy and to just have fun. On Saturday, July 28, 2012 an outdoor concert will be held on the street in the 300 block of Oak Street, which is being called the “SWEET H2O Concert on Oak” benefitting the Sweetwater Texas Theatre. The concert is being planned for Saturday afternoon and evening, beginning approximately 5 p.m. and continuing through midnight. This event will be provided free to the public and will feature a line-up of diverse and very talented Texas musicians.
Local businesses and groups are encouraged to participate and promote their cause or business through sidewalk booths that offer information, activities and food, refreshments and merchandise for purchase. Among the participants will be the local Girl Scouts organization, the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center, The Open Window, JavaJax selling ice cream treats and the STTAR (Sweetwater Texas Theatre Acquisition & Renovation) organization selling hamburgers, chips and drinks. According to STTAR board member and event coordinator, Weston Pyburn, there is still time for anyone interested in booth space to get involved. Give him a call at 325-933-4382 for more information.
This is a fund-raising event for the Texas Theatre (STTAR) and production costs, including musician’s compensation and local lodging, will be paid for with funds donated by private individuals, local businesses and organizations. These donations are tax deductible through STTAR’s 501(c)3 not for profit designation. Anyone who would like to make a contribution toward this event is asked to contact a STTAR board member or call 325-933-4382. While the concert is free to attend, there are expenses to cover and donations are still needed; we encourage your help in any amount.
The City of Sweetwater has given permission for this block of the street to be closed to traffic for the day. Traffic will need to reroute on Oak Street between Third and Fourth Streets, north and south, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday morning to allow for stage and booth set-up, and continuing through midnight that evening (traffic will flow east and west on Third and Fourth).
The live music performances will begin at 5 p.m. and will continue throughout the evening with each of the seven entertainers/bands beginning at the top of each hour through 11 p.m. The featured musical guests include a stellar list of professional, Texas and nationally-known musicians providing a variety of music genres from country to rock, blues, jazz, folk, Americana and rock-a-billystyles. Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs or other type of suitable outdoor seating. Coolers will be allowed; glass containers are discouraged. Come stake your claim on Oak Street and join your community for an evening of great music and entertainment. It takes all of us to make Sweetwater a better place to live, work and play.
