What would you do to inspire today’s youth? Would you skate across America? Well that’s what Austin Szelkowski, the Freedom Skater, is doing. He started just across Liberty Island, home of the Statue of Liberty, on October 4, 2010 and plans to travel across the United States to Santa Monica, California by mid-June. If you were one of the lucky residents of Sweetwater, you saw him skate down Broadway about 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
The Freedom Skater said he wanted to inspire America’s youth to dream big then to follow through on their dreams. Tuesday was when he met his 2,000 mile mark on a journey that is over 3,000 miles. He travels 30-50 miles a day and at night stays in his RV or if he’s lucky at the homes of generous strangers. He is an inspirational speaker who said one day on his way to a seminar he thought of the movie Forest Gump and wanted to recreate the inspirational running scene, but with a message behind it. He wanted to do something other than run, even though he acknowledges that running is more strenuous. He said that with skating, surface quality plays a big part. While going up on the old bridge on west Broadway in Sweetwater, he made it without hesitation. He seemed as if he hadn’t spent the last six months on the road roller skating. He did admit that he was a little delirious.
His message is great, especially during this time of the school year when Sweetwater's senior Mustangs are planning to step out of the comforts of home and into the adult world.
