Freshman boys end with win over Snyder; JV boys fall short

The Sweetwater freshman boys basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat Snyder, 63-48, in season-ending action Tuesday at Mustang Gym.
Kaleb Hoover had 17 points, Marquees Jenkins 15 and Dylan Bennett 14 for the Ponies, who trailed 11-10 after one quarter and led by just 22-19 at halftime. But Sweetwater (17-4 overall, 4-2 district) took charge with a 23-11 third-quarter run to open a 45-30 lead going into the final period. Tre Taylor had eight points, Deandre Gatson seven and Quentin Wetsel two.
Sweetwater’s JV boys team, which recently had three of its players moved up to the varsity, lost to Snyder 39-34 in its season finale Tuesday.
Willie Norman had nine points to pace the Mustangs, who were 10-14 overall but finished with a winless 0-6 district mark. Sweetwater trailed 19-13 at halftime, but cut Snyder’s lead to 23-19 at the end of three periods and briefly led in the fourth quarter. Nick Nemir had seven points, Nate Hardin six, Brandon Howell and Matt Kitchens five and Chris Gonzales two.
