Sweetwater High School’s boys golf team traveled to Big Spring and shot 337 to put it in fifth place, 35 shots out of first, when the first leg of the District 4-3A tournament ended Monday.
That means that the Mus-tangs will likely need better scores at each of the final 18-hole legs of the 54-hole event in order to advance to regional competition which will be held next month. Only the top two teams ad-vance to regionals, plus the top two players not on one of those teams. The regional tournament is April 14-15 in Lubbock. The second leg of district will be April 5 at Midland Greenwood, and the 4-3A tourney will end at Sweetwater on April 8.
The four schools currently ahead of Sweetwater are Big Spring (302), Wylie (314), Snyder (321) and Monahans (328). Wylie No. 2 is sixth at 355 and Greenwood (358) is in seventh place.
Individually for the Mus-tangs, Michael Hunt shot a 77 to tie him for fifth place among medalists with three other golfers. Also, Mason Andrews shot 81, Michael Hazard 83 and Mark Law-rence and Jeremy Witt 96.
In addition, Sweetwater has three players competing as medalists only. They are Colton Scott, who shot 104, plus Clay Kitchens (107) and Josh Proctor (118). The Sweetwater girls will begin their district tournament at Monahans on Thursday.
