Grass fire burns 1220 acres

Area firefighters were still battling hot spots on Saturday morning near CR 175 in Nolan County after a grass fire began around 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon with high winds contributing to the spread of the blaze. The fire is located just above Nolan near the intersection of CR 174 and CR 175.
"As of this morning there is no smoke in the air, but there are still hot spots that crews are finishing," said Matthew Lanier, Wildland Urban Interface Specialist with the Texas A&M Forest Service.
The fire was 50 percent contained on Saturday morning and crews were finishing dozer lines, working their way back to the base of the fire and will continue to patrol the area to make sure no flames shoot over the lines cut to stop the fire.
The last estimate given was about 1220 acres of land burned, but a final number will not be made until a flyover assessment is made. Primarily ranch land has been burned and no structures have been damaged by the blaze and no windmills were destroyed or damaged by the fire.
Many entities were involved in extinguishing the blaze including the Sweetwater Fire Department, Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department, Maryneal Volunteer Fire Department, Blackwell Volunteer Fire Department, Nolan Volunteer Fire Department, Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department, Mulberry Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, Snyder Volunteer Fire Department, Texas A&M Forest Service, Nolan County, who sent three maintainers, Texas DPS who helped maintain traffic around the area and the Nolan County Sheriff's Office.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but an investigator is on the scene to determine the cause.
