Nolan County firefighters extinguished a large grass fire that burned close to 800 acres near the Highland school on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters say they began battling the flames around noon Sunday, and had the blaze contained by about 3:30 p.m. The fire began at a travel trailer close to FM 608. A total of eight agencies responded to the fire with a total of 15 trucks and 35 people assisting with the blaze, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
"We saved a large group of round hay bales and kept the fire from jumping CR 147 that runs in front of the Highland school," said Madden. "Crews were out there until late in the night watching hot spots and making sure it did not rekindle. Water shortages and wind made the fire a hard one to contain. Once the tankers made it to the scene, things went a lot easier and we were able to get the upper hand."
Madden stated that the owner of the trailer said that the RV was being used by hunters. No injuries were reported. They believe that a heater left on in the trailer may have been the cause of the fire, but was difficult to tell with what was left from the blaze.
Agencies involved in extinguishing the blaze were Snyder Fire Department, Colorado City Volunteer Fire Department, Loraine Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department, Nolan Volunteer Fire Department, Maryneal Volunteer Fire Department, Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department and Sweetwater Fire Department.
