Hamlin mayor to Run for State Representative

October 21, 2013

Isaac Castro

Hamlin Mayor Isaac Castro has announced his candidacy for State Representative for District 71. The district encompasses Taylor, Nolan and Jones Counties. Mayor Castro is a Republican and will run against incumbent Susan King of Abilene in the March 4, 2013 primary.
Mayor Castro was born in San Miguel, Tamaulipas, Mexico to a Mexican father and an American mother. He moved to Old Glory, Texas when he was five years old. He attended elementary and high school at Old Glory. After graduating as the valedictorian, he attended Angelo State University and graduated with high honors in 1977. He was then accepted to the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, Texas. In 1980, he graduated from law school, passed the bar exam and became a licensed attorney in the state of Texas. His first job out of law school was as the County Attorney for Stonewall County. He served out the remainder of the term of the preceding attorney, who had resigned. When he was appointed to the position, it was too late to file for the next election for County Attorney. He ran as a write-in candidate, but was not successful. He worked in Hamlin at the law offices of Jack Willingham and John Watts. In 1982, he opened his own law office in Aspermont, Texas and in 1984, he ran for Stonewall County Attorney and won. He was reelected in 1988. In 1990, he resigned his position and moved to Hamlin where he continues to practice. He served as the attorney for the city of Hamlin until 2012 when he ran successfully for mayor. He now practices primarily Probate and Real Estate Law.
Mayor Castro stated, “I am a fiscal and social conservative. I am pro-life and I believe there are many areas that I would like to improve for the residents of District 71. I will be addressing these issues as the campaign progresses.”
