On Saturday, March 17, in Sipapu, New Mexico the Sipapu Ski Resort held its 9th Annual Cardboard Derby. The Cardboard Derby continues to grow in participants and spectators every year. This year’s event the “Team Division” was won again by “The West Texas Wind Runners” consisting of team members Chris Hamlin (duct tape specialist), James Hamlin (driver) and Dustin Baker (stability).
The “West Texas Wind Runners” constructed their craft solely out of cardboard, duct tape and twine. Chris Hamlin designed the craft to resemble an old 70s van with attitude. James Hamlin, 5 years old, still remains the youngest competitor to race in the Team Division. This year Dustin Baker joined the team. The race is determined on speed and closest to the target. The “West Texas Wind Runners” vehicle was able to keep the team's title of winning. They have now won two years in a row.
Last year the Sipapu Ski resort asked that teams be creative with a braking system. Chris Hamlin designed cardboard brakes on the vehicle. These brakes enabled the “West Texas Wind Runners” more stability and accuracy as they approached the target.
Home to the longest ski season in New Mexico, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort offers a natural mountain terrain, perfect for all ability levels. From green and blue groomed cruisers to the steeps and powder stashes found above lift 1, this mountain has something for everyone. Historically Sipapu was the first Ski Resort to open in New Mexico.
The weather conditions the day of the race were 22Ëš and by afternoon the temperatures rose to approximately 60Ëš. Supporting the racers on the snowy slope were Cindy Hamlin, Rusty and Pam Goates and Mary Carr. The West Texas Wind Runners are currently looking for a sponsor.
