Funeral services for Harmon Gene Hurst, 83, of Abilene, formerly of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Keith Clifton officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 1:15 p.m. until service time on Thursday, March 7, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, located at 401 East Third Street in Sweetwater.
Hurst died Monday, March 4, 2013 at Mesa Springs Retirement Center in Abilene.
Hurst was born July 28, 1929, in Canyon, Texas. He married Ivy Mae Haywood on Jan. 19, 1951, in Sweetwater. Gene was a member of Lamar Street Baptist Church in Sweetwater. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and also served in the National Guard. Gene worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone and AT&T for 32 years. He also was a full time farmer for 30 years and 12 years part time. He lived in Sweetwater since 1964.
Survivors include his daughter, Vicki Berkobien of Abilene; son, Terry Hurst and wife Kathy of Broken Arrow, Okla.; sister, Helen McElwee of Lubbock; granddaughters, Miranda Morris and husband Wolfgang of Lago Vista, Rebecca Faith Hughes and husband Michael of Abilene and Kari Hill and husband Ryan of Savannah; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ivy Mae Hurst, on May 21, 2011; his parents, Eunice Irene Freeman Hurst and Robert Harmon Hurst; brother, R.J. Hurst; sisters, Mary Ellen Franklin and Irene Beck; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Hurst.
Memorials may be made to Lamar Street Baptist Church Youth, 513 Lamar Street, Sweetwater, Texas 79556.
Pallbearers are Vernon Duncan, Ronny Joe Dennis, Jack Kennedy, Neal Squires, Norman Massey and Jimmy Davis.
