The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD) will be administering flu vaccine on Wednesdays during regular immunization clinic. A special flu clinic will be on Friday, Oct. 21, from 8-11:30 a.m.; the cost for the flu vaccine is $20. Medicare patients are reminded to bring their Medicare (Part B) cards, and any Medicare supplement insurance. Pneumonia shots are available for $60. Children are eligible to receive the flu vaccine through the Texas Vaccine for Children Program for $6. Regular immunization hours at the SNCHD are 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m., and the second Wednesday of each month until 6 p.m.
The single best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each fall. In the absence of vaccine, there are other ways to protect against flu; antiviral medications can be used.
Other flu prevention tips:Â
• Avoid close contact — Avoid people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
• Stay home when you are sick — If possible, stay home from work, school and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
• Cover your mouth and nose — Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
• Clean your hands — Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
