Freshman art student Amber Hernandez advanced from the regional level to the State Visual Art Scholastic Event with her "Watercolor Hands". The event was held at Bryan High School April 13-14 where there were 1400 high school art entries from all over the state. Amber medaled with a superior rating. This is the first year Sweetwater High School has been represented by a freshman at State VASE. In 2007 Jacob Gamel received the highest award of Gold Seal for his charcoal "Self Portrait". Sweetwater High School art teacher, Scharles Kelley has had art students advance to the state level in 2000 (Tara Rains), 2003 (Johnathan Nickerson), 2004 (Casey LaRue), 2006 (Jacob Gamel, Simone Hernandez, medaled), 2008 (Jacob Gamel, Rachal Cotherman) and 2012 (Amber Hernandez).
