Michael Hernandez was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the May 2010 murder of Roland Lopez. The judge sentenced Hernandez just after 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
Hernandez was convicted of murder Wednesday in an Abilene courtroom by a jury of his peers.
Hernandez was on trial for the May 2010 murder of Roland Lopez of Sweetwater, who was found beaten to death in front of a home on the corner of North 11th and Glendale in Abilene. Lopez was said to be visiting his daughter at his ex-girlfriend's house.
Jury selection began on Monday, and the jury handed down their verdict on Wednesday.
On Tuesday a witness testified that Hernandez and Juan Rodriguez beat Lopez to death with baseball bats. The witness also said that they continued to beat him even after he fell to his ground and laid on his back. Hernandez and Rodriquez were arrested several days after the incident.
