Highland boys finish 5th in Region II-1A golf

SAN ANGELO — The Highland boys golf team finished in fifth place after firing 400 in its last round Tuesday of the Region II-1A tournament held at Quicksand Golf Course.
Highland, which shot a first-round 411, finished at 811 to trail only Garden City, Eula, Sterling City and Rankin in the 16-team field.
Garden City (693), Eula (738) and Sterling City (781) are the three teams going to the state tournament on May 14-15 at Austin’s Lions Municipal Golf Course.
Ruger Duniven, who shot 91 for a 187 total, and Konner Turney, who shot 89 for a 188 total, paced Highland’s effort as the two placed 15th and 17th, respectively, among tournament medalists. Sam Spaulding (110-218), Dustin Gray (110-222) and Ethan Peacock (114-222) were Highland’s other players.
Trent McMillan of Garden City (84-165) beat out Eula’s Dakota Carson (83-165) for the medalist title in a playoff. Eula’s Cade Smith placed third with 82-169.
