Highland falls to MC

September 2, 2012

JAYTON — A very young Highland team was unable to stay with Motley County in its season opener Friday, as the highly-regarded Matadors jumped out to a 26-6 lead after one period en route to 60-12 win.
After giving up the game’s first two touchdowns, High-land got within 12-6 when Michael Hyde scored on a 1-yard run. But the Hornets couldn’t get any closer than that as Motley County — coming off a state runnerup finish in Six-Man Division II and ranked No. 2 in this year’s preseason poll — answered with three more touchdowns before Highland could score again.
The Matadors built their advantage to 46-12 by half-time before closing things out in the third period — due to Six-Man’s 45-point mercy rule — with two more touchdowns.
Hyde finished as the top rusher for Highland with 58 yards on 12 carries. Quar-terback Ethan Wilson com-pleted 7 of 16 passes for 71 yards and Jacob Richburg completed a 3-yard toss. Ron Covington caught three passes for 68 yards to pace the receivers. On defense, Gaga Soedarsono and Shelby Howard each had five solo tackles to lead the Hornets and Richburg intercepted a a pass.
Highland plays its home opener this Friday when it entertains Sterling City starting at 7:30 p.m.
