Living up to their No. 17 ranking, the Highland girls basketball team finished as the champions of their own Hilltop Classic tournament on Saturday.
After beating Roscoe 45-13 in Friday’s semifinals, the Lady Hornets (11-3) won the championship by defeating Garden City 36-25 at Highland’s gym.
Kara Hughey and Sierra Allen paced Highland with 11 and 10 points, respective-ly, while Jessica McCain had seven, Beth Richburg six and Megan Thompson two. Highland led 6-4, 18-11 and 31-19 at the breaks while holding an opponent to under 30 points for the third straight time and seventh time in 14 games.
Garden City did win the boys championship Satur-day, as it overwhelmed the Snyder JV boys 82-27 in the title game. Eleven players scored for the Bearkats.
Wylie’s JV boys took third place as they defeated Rotan 63-19, and Robert Lee won consolation by holding off Loraine 33-31. Highland’s boys (2-9) took seventh by knocking off Roscoe 37-31 on Saturday. Ethan Wilson had 15 points, Ron Covington 11, Shelby Howard nine and Kaden Nachlinger two for Highland while for Roscoe (0-8), Keeston Ford was the leading scorer with a game-high 19 points. Also scoring were Jesus Leanos with eight points and Dillon Freeman and Luke Rovig with two each. Highland led 17-4, 23-14 and 30-23 at the breaks.
Roscoe’s girls (6-6) played for third place but fell to Loraine 58-55. Lynnsi Mos-es led Roscoe with 21 points while Faith Boren had 12, Sara Kingston nine, Caroli-na Perez eight, Mirian Solis four and Stina Tomlin one for the Plowgirls.
