Two Class 1A, Division II Nolan County basketball teams, the Highland girls and Blackwell boys, both won their district games on Tuesday.
Highland’s girls (12-9) are 3-1 in District 11 after winning at Loraine 59-48. The Lady Hornets over-came a 28-26 halftime deficit as Callie Sandusky scored 18 points and Shy-an Womack 15 for the winners. Sierra Allen had eight points, Kara Hughey and Beth Richburg seven and Lora Stewart and Jes-sica McCain two apiece.
Blackwell’s boys are 1-1 in District 12 after beat-ing Paint Rock 46-30.
Caleb Magness (20 points) and Jayden Jones (10) led Blackwell, which improved to 8-9 overall with the victory.
Caleb Jeter scored six points, Mason Magness five, Brandon Elliott three and Mark Monroe two for the Hornets, who held leads of 12-3, 27-13 and 38-20 at the breaks.
However, the Highland boys and Blackwell girls came up a bit short in their contests.
Highland is still winless (0-2) in District 11 after falling to Loraine 40-39. Highland also trailed by one, 24-23, at halftime of the closely fought game. Josh Andrews had 18 and Landon Rowlett 13 for the Hornets, while Ron Cov-ington had four points and Sheldon Hall and Daniel Nelson two for Highland (2-16 overall). Meanwhile, the Blackwell girls (1-3) lost their District 12 game to Paint Rock 55-43 de-spite Jessica Morrow’s 21 points. Reccie Roland had eight, Jennifer Allen six and Amanda Bullard and Kaitlyn Gaston four each.
Blackwell played Paint Rock on more-or-less even terms over the last three quarters but trailed 15-8 after the first period.
