Highland girls stay unbeaten with win

SANDS — The Highland girls basketball team, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, improved its season record to 4-0 on Friday with a 64-49 win over Smyer.
Five different players — Beth Richburg (12), Sierra Allen (11), Madison Moseley (11), Hannah Allen (10) and Sydny Helbert (10) — scored in double figures for the Lady Hornets, whose four wins have all been by at least 11 points. Schyler Kimbrell had eight points and Kay-lee Martin two.
Highland led 16-7 after one quarter, but saw its lead trimmed to 30-24 at halftime. It was a 10-point game (48-38) going to the fourth quarter.
Highland’s JV girls (1-3) got their first win, 32-19, over Smyer’s JV.
Kailee Hall led the win by scoring 10 points while Bailey Garrett scored nine, Emily Harris five, Kristen Harris four and Madison Braden, Bailey Garrett and Summer Huizar two.
Highland plays its home opener on Tuesday against Clyde. Highland’s boys go to Panther Creek to start their season on Tuesday.
