Highland girls sting S’water to open year

November 5, 2013

Class 3A met Class 1A on Tuesday when the Highland girls basketball team made the short trip to Sweetwater as both teams opened their 2013-14 seasons.
And it was no contest — but not the way you might think.
Ahead 21-19 at halftime, the visiting Lady Hornets completely dominated the last two periods as they crushed the Lady Mustangs 55-24 at Mustang Gym.
Highland, which returns the bulk of its team that was a Class 1A, Division II state semifinalist a year ago, did not allow a second-half field goal until the final seconds of the game while building a huge lead. Sierra Allen paced the Lady Hornets with 20 points, while Beth Richburg also reached dou-ble figures with 13.
Cierra Knox led Sweetwa-ter with 12 points. The Lady Mustangs, who were mis-sing three players that will join the team after the vol-leyball playoffs, managed to hang tough until Highland began the third quarter with a 6-0 run — with Allen scor-ing all six points.
“We got a little tired in the third quarter and they just ran by us,” said coach Al Miller, whose team will host San Angelo Lake View this Saturday. “We couldn’t get them blocked out and when we did, they still got the rebound. But for having played only two eight-minute quarters of one scrimmage so far, we did okay.”
Abby McPherson and Nisha Williams scored four points and Hayley Brown-low and Taylor McPherson two for Sweetwater.
