Highland, Roscoe girls wrap up playoff berths

January 27, 2014

Highland and Roscoe are going back to the Class 1A, Division II girls playoffs after winning Friday in very convincing fashion. High-land blasted Ira, 72-20, to hold on to first place in District 13-1A, D-II at 7-0. The Lady Hornets are 21-2 overall with three games left in the regular season before going back to the playoffs for the 13th straight year.
Roscoe beat Westbrook in its game Friday, 46-22. The Plowgirls are 6-1 in District 13-1A and will host Highland this Friday.
There’s a good chance that Highland and Roscoe repeat their 1-2 finish last year in 13-1A, since Ira (4-3), the third-place team, is two games behind Roscoe.
Highland’s win over Ira was led by Sierra Allen’s 20 points. Also reaching dou-ble figures were Madison Moseley with 17 and Kaylee Martin, who had 11 points. Rounding out the scoring were Hannah Allen (eight), Sydny Helbert (eight), Beth Richburg (four), Kelsi Johns (two) and Schyler Kimbrell (two). Highland led by 27 points (39-12) at halftime.
Roscoe led Westbrook 8-1, 23-12 and 34-20 at the breaks, allowing single dig-it scoring in all but the sec-ond quarter. Roscoe was led by Eva Aguayo’s 14 points. Sunshine Saddler had 10, Sam Ortega seven, Shelby Brown five, Whitney Wil-liams and Selena Perez four and Mia Herrera two.
On the boys side, Roscoe now has a one-game lead over Highland as the Plow-boys (4-1) won 57-28 over Westbrook while Highland lost to first-place Ira 67-34 on Friday. Highland is now two games behind Ira (5-0) entering the second half of district play, with five games left in the season. Highland and Roscoe meet this Friday in Roscoe.
Roscoe jumped out to a huge 24-4 lead after the opening period vs. West-brook and led 33-14 at halftime en route to the win. Jesus Leanos had 20 points and Javier Leanos 17, while Cutter Davila had five, Kevin Lavalais, Shelton Toliver and Anthony Ortegon four, Dillon Freeman two and Luis Villa one. Roscoe came into district with just one win but is now 5-12 and on a four-game winning streak.
Both of Highland’s dist-rict losses have been to Ira. The Hornets were led Fri-day by Isaac Rios and Jacob Richburg’s nine points. Kevin Box had five, Kaden Nachlinger four, Brandon Stevens three and Laramie Thompson and Michael Hyde two for Highland, which trailed 29-11 at the end of the first quarter and was down 48-19 at halftime.
Both Highland teams are scheduled to play at Loraine on Tuesday while Roscoe will travel to Ira. However, that schedule will be altered because the Highland girls won’t have to face Loraine, which has forfeited its dis-trict season. Highland’s girls knocked off Roscoe 70-22 in the teams’ first meeting this year, but Roscoe won the boys matchup 39-33.
