Though they donâ€™t start the playoffs until next week, the Highland and Roscoe girls basketball teams wonâ€™t be idle this weekend. Both have scheduled warmup games to prepare them for postseason play.
Highland (10-0 in District 13-A, 27-3) plays Valley at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Jay-ton after ending district with a 67-24 win over Hermleigh while Roscoe (7-3, 18-11) gets a tuneup at 5 p.m. today vs. Zephyr in Zephyr.
While Highland will be making a playoff trip for the 12th straight year, the 2012-13 Lady Hornets have been especially dominant with all 10 wins in district play by 21 points or more. Highland received a first-round bye as district champion and wonâ€™t start the playoffs until at least Feb. 14.
Roscoe, the 13-A runnerup, gets no bye and will face Sterling City on Monday in bi-district. The game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. in Winters. Sterling City (9-5, 16-11) was the No. 3 team in 14-A this season.
There are still two games left to play for the District 13-A boys and the three playoff teams are known. Highland (6-2, 13-13) is second in the district to Ira (8-0), taking over the No. 2 spot after Tuesdayâ€™s 37-31 win over Hermleigh (5-3). The Hornets are at 1-7 Westbrook today while Roscoe (2-6) will visit Hermleigh. Highland ends the regular season by hosting Ira next Tuesday and Hermleigh entertains Loraine (2-6), so a tiebreaker may be necessary.
