Highland, Sweetwater teams finish 1-2 at Highland JV event

Highland and Sweetwater played for the champion-ship at Highland’s JV girls basketball tournament that was held at Highland this past Saturday.
Highland beat Sweetwater 50-35 to win first place at the one-day, four-team tournament, which also had JV girls teams from Ira and Roscoe. Bailey Garrett led Highland with 13 points in the title game while Sabrina Romero had 12, Kailee Hall 11, Madison Braden eight, Kristen Harris three, Emily Harris two and Kellse Cornett one. Highland led 18-8, 34-17 and 47-24 at the breaks. Sweetwater was led by Marissa Sanchez’s nine points while Payton Moore had eight, Gabby Fuentes six, Bianca Castillo four, Lauren Jones and Jasmine Reddic three and Kensi Chowning two.
Highland advanced to the championship game with a 27-22 first-round win over Roscoe. Hall had 10 points, Garrett nine, Kristen Harris four, Romero three and Madison Braden one. Cha Cha Chavez had seven, Magali Casas six, Lyndi Wil-kinson three and Karina Cisneros, Mireya Sanchez and Bergan Trevino two apiece for Roscoe.
Castillo had 19 points and Chowning 11 fo Sweetwater in an opening 49-14 win over Ira. Alaina Andrews had seven, Reddic five, Jones four, Mickenzie Brownlow two and Moore one.
Roscoe played for the consolation title and lost to Ira 30-12. Casas had six points, Trevino four and Chavez two for the Plowgirls.
In a single game Friday, Highland’s JV girls were defeated 33-23 by Hamlin. Garrett had eight points for Highland while Hall had six points and Emily Harris and Kristen Harris two.
