Highland still has two unbeaten basketball teams as it gets ready to host its Hilltop Classic tournament that begins Thursday.
Highlandâ€™s girls, the top-ranked team in Class 1A, Division II, improved to 8-0 Tuesday with a 45-38 win over Albany. Madison Moseley led the way with 14 points while Sierra Allen and Hannah Allen had 11 points each.
Also scoring for the Lady Hornets, playing for the first time since Nov. 21, were Sydny Helbert and Beth Richburg with four points and Kelsi Johns with one.
Highland led just 11-9 after one quarter, but out-scored Albany 12-4 in the second period for a 23-13 halftime lead and held on for the win. Highlandâ€™s JV girls (2-4) also won, 29-27, over Albanyâ€™s JV as Bailey Garrett scored 12 points, Kailee Hall six, Sabrina Romero five, Kellse Cornett and Kristen Harris two and Summer Huizar and Emily Harris one.
Highlandâ€™s boys also led at the end of each quarter vs. Irion County. It was 14-9, 22-15 and 29-22 at the quarter breaks.
The Hornets were paced by Ethan Wilson with 11 points. Kevin Box added nine, Seth Wood eight, Isaac Rios seven, Michael Hyde five, Brandon Stevens four and Kaden Nachlinger two. The JV boys (2-1) also won Tuesday, beating Irion Countyâ€™s JV 44-39. The Hornets were paced by Emrick Wilsonâ€™s 15 points while Jo Basye had seven, Zack Cornett six, Shelby Howard and Eli Shelton five, Tristan Rawlings four and Bobby Weems two.
The Roscoe girls are now 5-4 following their 51-34 win over Trent. Eva Aguayo paced the Plowgirls with 17 points while Selena Perez and Sunshine Saddler had eight points, Samantha Ortega six, Shelby Brown and Whitney Williams four and Mia Herrera and Ash-ton Payne two. Roscoe led 13-8, 23-14 and 36-20 at the quarter breaks.
Roscoeâ€™s boys led Trent 13-8 after one quarter and were still ahead 22-20 at intermission, but Trent came back to pull out a 54-42 win after winning the third quarter 25-6.
Roscoe was led by Jesus Leanos with 25 points while Anthony Ortegon had seven, Luis Villa four and Kevin Lavalais and Javier Leanos three apiece. Roscoeâ€™s JV boys won 55-12 with Roman Acunaâ€™s 16 points leading the way and three others scoring eight points.
Blackwellâ€™s teams were at Westbrook on Tuesday in their final games prior to their Oak Creek Classic that begins Thursday. Informa-tion on their games was not available at press time. The girls lost to Jayton 58-43 in their previous game with Hailey Bennett scoring 18 points and Stephanie Met-calf nine for Blackwell.
