Holiday blood drives will take place in Sweetwater on Thursday, Dec. 15. Meek Blood Center will have a bloodmobile at the Courthouse and another at the Lions Club building from noon until 6 p.m. The blood collected at these drives will help ensure blood availability for the upcoming holidays. Sixty eight donors participated in the community blood drives that took place on Sept. 29.
A blood drive took place at Sweetwater High School on Nov. 30. Ninety one students participated and 78 pints of blood were collected.
"There are patients receiving blood right now who owe their lives to a high school student," said Frances Baker, donor recruiter for Meek Blood Center.
"I am very proud of these students who have the courage to give blood. They are impacting their world in a significant and lasting way. I would love to see community members match or exceed the high school turnout at the blood drives on Dec. 15," Baker continued.
Meek Blood Center supplies all of the blood and blood products used for patient care at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and 17 other hospitals in a 14-county area.
Donors must be at least 17 years old (age 16 with signed parental consent), weigh a minimum of 120 pounds and in general good health. All donors must present a photo ID. Those who have eligibility questions may call Meek Blood Center at 325-670-2798 or visit the website at www.meekbloodcenter.org. Each donor will receive a T-shirt or a 2012 wall calendar.
