February 28, 2011

Numerous fires in Big Country over the weekend

Ten to thirteen homes were lost when a fire hit the northern edge of Colorado City and forced evacuations Sunday night, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
The fires when fueled by high winds Sunday and extremely dry conditions.
The fires forced the evacuation of many homes in Colorado City late Sunday, as well as a nursing home, Kristi Lee Manor, in Colorado City.
"The Big Country Medical Reserve Corps set up a shelter in Colorado City due to the evacuations and they did an excellent job in setting it up," said Madden.
Madden stated that many fires broke out in the Big Country this weekend, including two fires near railroad tracks in Sweetwater that were started by trains. One fire burned 10-15 acres of land.
