BALLINGER — The Highland boys relied largely on their defense to get them into the Class A playoffs this season. It wasn’t enough, however, to overcome an anemic offensive effort in Friday’s bi-district game vs. Robert Lee as the Steers built a first-half lead and held on for a 37-22 victory at Ballinger High School.
District 13-A, D-II runnerup Highland (15-15) held only one lead, 4-3, in the first minute of the second quarter. Yes, 4-3.
But the Hornets were unable to score again until the final minute of the half as Robert Lee (17-8) took charge with a 13-0 run en route to a 16-7 lead at intermission.
The Steers held leads of at least nine points the rest of the way as they advanced to face Zephyr in the area round of the playoffs.
Laramie Thompson led Highland with six points while Ron Covington and Seth Wood had four, Ethan Wilson three, Kevin Box and Jacob Richburg two and Brandon Stevens one.
“We all know the weakest part of our game this year has been offense,” said coach Logan Rawls.
“We knew coming out in the second half we had to knock down shots and we didn’t knock down enough of them.”
