Four Nolan County high school seniors have received scholarships in the amount of $1,200 each for the upcoming school year through the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) Nursing Scholarship Fund. The fund, established three years ago, has provided thousands of dollars to local students to help them achieve higher education in the field of healthcare.
Three scholarship recipients are from Sweetwater High School and include Cassandra Diaz, Christian Richardson and Genea Cherry. Roscoe High School senior Melanie Diaz also received an award.
“Higher education is critical for advancing in life,” said Rosa Best, chief nursing officer and registered nurse at RPMH. “Healthcare professionals provide an invaluable service to communities like Nolan County, so we understand the importance of supporting future healthcare professionals through the scholarship fund.”
Best presented the awards to students of both schools last month. Recipients were selected through an application review process detailing motivation for career choice, academic grade point average (GPA), additional scholarship awards, family members employed at RPMH, acceptance into a college or university, community involvement and reference letters.
The scholarship committee is comprised of seven registered nurses employed by RPMH who voluntarily coordinate various fundraising activities throughout the year. Donations have also been given to the hospital in memory of loved ones.
“We try our best to raise as much as possible each year through events such as a garage sale, which we plan to hold later this summer,” said Best. “All proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund.”
The committee’s goal is the support the progression of professional nursing in an effort to continue the quality care provided in rural communities such as Nolan County.
