For the second year in a row, the lawn outside Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is sporting pink stakes as part of an initiative to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
“At the close of the Field of Pink program last year, we exceeded initial expectations and were pleased with the contributions and enthusiasm from our community,” said Donna Boatright, administrator of RPMH. “People were talking about breast cancer, and that’s exactly what we want them to do. Top-of-mind awareness will lead to increased knowledge and hopefully save a life.”
Field of Pink is a program that began last year through the hospital’s Community Outreach Team. Locals can purchase pink stakes for $5 each to support breast cancer research or for the memory of a loved one. All proceeds raised from the campaign benefit the American Cancer Society.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
“Local programs such as this are crucial to underscore the importance of breast cancer screening and knowing more about symptoms and risks,” Boatright explained. “Until we can find a cure, discovering the cancer at an early stage is important for increased survival rates.”
Studies and new research make progress each year in the causes, prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Given the widespread nature of this cancer, researchers continue to seek a solution that could potentially save the lives of more than 39,510 women who die each year as a result of breast cancer.
To purchase a stake in the Field of Pink and donate to breast cancer research, please call 325-235-1701 ext. 344, or visit www.rpmh.net. Donations are being accepted through Nov. 9, 2012.
