Hot ‘Stangs to start new year at home

Sweetwater’s boys, winners of five straight, will try to stay hot when they start 2013 basketball action by facing Coahoma at 6 p.m. today at Mustang Gym.
The Mustangs (9-7) beat Colorado City 45-42 in their last home game Dec. 18 to start the streak and won all four games at Anson’s hol-iday tournament that ended on Saturday.
Kaleb Hoover scored 16 points, Rhett Torres 13 and Dylan Bennett 11 in Satur-day’s 61-53 victory over Merkel in the title game as Sweetwater got some revenge for a loss to Merkel in early December.
Hoover, who rejoined the team at the beginning of the streak after coming back from injury, and Bennett were named to the all-tournament team at Anson.
Sweetwater is getting hot at the right time as the Mustangs have just two more games before hosting Monahans in their District 4-3A opener here Jan. 11.
Sweetwater goes to San Angelo Lake View on Tues-day to end non-district.
Sweetwater’s girls (14-9) start district play on Friday at Big Spring with tip off at 6:15 p.m. The Lady Mus-tangs won their first two games at Slaton’s tourna-ment this past weekend before losing their last two.
Sweetwater hosts Midland Greenwood Tuesday before both teams host Monahans in their district doubleheader here Jan. 11. The Roscoe and Highland girls will also start district play on Friday.
