Karen Hunt was named Teacher of the Year at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center. She is a Pre-K and PPCD teacher and has taught at Sweetwater ISD for ten years.
Overall, Hunt has been teaching for 22 years. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwest University in Georgetown, TX.
During the 2006-07 school year, Hunt was named Teacher of the Year at East Ridge Elementary and also earned the Region 14 Elementary Teacher of the Year award. She is a member of the TCTA (Texas Classroom Teachers Association), as well as a member of the 4th and Elm Church of Christ.
Hunt's 22 years in teaching have consisted of elementary special education, regular education and now includes the Pre-K/PPCD setting.
"I believe and hope my actions portray a philosophy of getting to know each child personally, accepting the child and the level they are when I receive them, and then helping them reach as far as they possibly can in the incredibly short amount of time we have together," she explained.
She said she is "blessed" with her teaching opportunity at J.P. Cowen, as every day offers new experiences. By teaching such a young group of learners, Hunt has seen a new side to the words "exposure", "composure", and the flexibility of "flying by the seat of your pants".
Additionally, she enjoys the fully-incluse classroom setting created on campus. She noted that it teaches all students to accept and embrace differences, where everyone plays a vital role in the classroom community.
"It is both humbling and a real kick to know that for the majority of the students, I am their first educational experience," Hunt said, "so I had better make it a great one!"
