Irion County didn’t com-plete a pass, had 85 yards in penalties, committed four turnovers and its first two possessions ended with fumbles on Roby’s side of the field Saturday at the Sammy Baugh Classic.
But Roby failed to take full advantage and committed several mistakes as well that proved costly. In the end, the Hornets were able to break a 14-14 halftime tie and pull out a 30-20 win over the Lions in the season opener for both teams.
Roby got to the Hornets’ 26 on the game’s first possession only to turn it over. But Irion County returned the favor, coughing up 40 yards on its first possession and fumbling at its own 2 to gift wrap a 1-yard run by Roby quarterback Lorenzo Ramirez that gave the Lions an early 8-0 lead.
Roby got another chance to score after recovering a fumble at Irion County’s 35 a short time later. However, the Hornets held and put together a five-play, 68-yard drive to pull within 8-6.
The Hornets began the scoring drive with a 42-yard run by Dontae Harris to Roby’s 26, and quarterback Vicente Gomez’s 12-yard run ended it. Irion County then went ahead with a 74-yard, eight-play drive that ended with Reb Sullenger scoring on a 4-yard run. But Roby tied it on a 77-yard Ramirez pass to Tyler Reeves and it was 14-14 at halftime.
Roby appeared to dodge a bullet by recovering another fumble deep in its territory early in the second half, but the Hornets’ Chance Mor-ris intercepted a pass and gave Irion County a 22-14 lead by returning it for the go-ahead touchdown.
Roby’s frustrations grew as the Lions drove to Irion County’s 22- and 18-yard lines on their next two possessions before coming up short on fourth down. But the Lions finally cashed in following Toby Pippin’s interception which he returned to the Hornet 6.
Roby faced third-and goal from its 19 when Ramirez found Reeves again over the middle for the touchdown to make it 22-20 with 8:25 to play. However, a potential tying two-point run was stopped short.
Irion County proceeded to launch its game-winning drive, with Gomez scoring on a 1-yard sneak with 2:01 to play and Harris convert-ing a two-point run.
