Improved SW teams go to Wylie

January 18, 2013

Sweetwater varsity teams in action tonight at Wylie: Girls — 6:15 p.m., Boys — 7:30 p.m.

Going a collective 4-2 in district play after totalling just two wins a year ago is a good start. And today’s games at Abilene Wylie will provide yet another barometer for just how much Sweetwater’s varsity basketball teams have improved this season.
Sweetwater’s girls (3-1 in district) will tie Wylie (4-0) for the lead in District 4-3A if they can upset the Lady Bulldogs, the two-time defending state champions and currently ranked No. 18 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
Sweetwater beat Snyder 56-45 Tuesday, while Wylie defeated Greenwood (3-1) 69-43 in its last outing.
Sweetwater’s boys (1-1) come into the game fresh off their first district win at Snyder on Tuesday, as they prevailed 65-49.
The Mustangs, 10-21 a year ago, are 12-8 overall and have won eight of their last nine games while the Lady Mustangs, 15-18 this past year, have a 17-10 record this season.
Like the girls, the Wylie boys boast a state ranking as they are currently No. 5 in the TABC poll. But Wylie barely held off Greenwood, 60-57, on Tuesday.
Highland’s girls and boys will try to continue their perfect starts in District 13-A, Division II when they host Hermleigh.
The Lady Hornets — who surprisingly have yet to garner a state ranking — are 4-0 in district and 21-3 overall after beating Roscoe 41-20 Tuesday, while Highland’s boys are 2-0 after beating Roscoe 35-23 on Tuesday. Hermleigh’s girls are 1-3 and the boys are 1-1.
Roscoe’s girls (2-2), who are tied for third place, will also resume district play at Loraine, which is currently in last place at 0-4. Meanwhile, Roscoe’s boys (0-2) will try to escape the district cellar when they play a Loraine squad also 0-2 in district.
