Industrial Park updates heard by SEED Board
A number of updates were heard from the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) staff during the group's board of directors meeting held on Monday morning, March 12, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce.Executive Director Ken Becker gave two updates regarding the Sweetwater Business Park to the board, one being that updated appraisal numbers need to be acquired for the industrial area. Following some discussion, the board decided to look at similar properties in order to determine the new number for interested clients in the future.Lighting for the Business Park was also examined. Board member Billy Whisenant, with assistance from two other companies, offered recommendations for minimal lighting. However, as the prices of copper, steel and concrete continue to rise, the pricing for the project changes as well. The board is still determining what steps to take--whether to go out for bids or work with Oncor, who made a presentation on the matter during the December 2011 meeting--by comparing prices. Signs at the Business Park will also play a role in considering the lighting, and Mr. Becker stated that he will bring information to the board at a later date.In addition, an update was given on the five-year commitment between SEED and Texas Tech University. Meetings have been reported as going well and with the involvement of local business Buzzi Unicem, the program was stated as having has great potential.Mr. Becker also informed the board about upcoming trade shows that SEED will take part in, including a plastics show scheduled for April in Orlando, Florida with Ludlum Measurements to consider future involvement. He will be also be attending a recycling show with Ludlum's in mid-April which will be held in Las Vegas. The local business TST, Inc. will also be involved at this show.Furthermore, Mr. Becker told the board that SEED has signed up to attend the 2012 Permian Basin International Oil Show in Odessa. The bi-annual event has continually proven to be an imperative and growing show for the petroleum industry.Kirstin Smith, the Asst. Marketing/Admin. Director, also gave her update. She gave a report on their trade show booth and presented the booth's new concept to the board, which came in at a lower cost than originally budgeted. One of the perks of the booth is a map, which has proven beneficial at trade shows in bringing attendees to SEED's booth. The booth is generally used at least three times a year, but Ms. Smith hopes to utilize it more as SEED continues to find new shows to attend. The 2012 Senior Interview dates were also discussed, and Ms. Smith noted that interviewers are still needed. A preparation assembly is set for April 16, at Sweetwater High School, with the interview days slated for April 24 and 25. Talks are currently taking place to set Senior Interview Dates at Roscoe Collegiate High School.A few action items were also presented at the meeting. The minutes from the February 2012 meeting were approved, along with the payment of accounts payable. The January 2012 financial statements were approved as well, with a particular note that--prior to this past weekend's Rattlesnake Round-Up, work within the city limits has kept hotels, motels and RV parks at full capacity or with steady, continuous traffic. The board also approved changing the June meeting date due to the fact that the original meeting date of the 11th--set right after this year's AWEA (American Wind Energy Association) conference in Atlanta--would not give SEED staff enough time to prepare for the meeting. The meeting will now take place on June 18.
